Kern River Clinic helps address healthcare access in central California, where the nearest medical provider is often out of reach. Our design proposed an intimate campus of community-focused care spaces balanced by paths and secluded areas for meditation to support the health of individuals and the community. Buildings on-site provide for both outpatient and inpatient care facilities, on-site staff housing for visiting doctors and nurse practitioners, a community room, and a meditation chapel. These structures collect around a central courtyard and gathering space. An asymmetric site organization draws from the immediate context to allow each separate building to focus on view corridors that curate the natural beauty of the Kern River basin. The material palette is simple and sourced from locally-available lumber and steel. Left in their natural state, the materials are intended to age and soften.
